What this is for

This code sets out what we expect from you while you are training with us, and what you can expect from us in return. It applies from the moment you enrol until your training is complete.

It exists for two reasons. The first is safety — you will be working around heavy plant, and how people behave around machinery is not a matter of preference. The second is fairness. Everyone training here has paid to be here and is entitled to a productive, respectful environment.

Safety comes first

This is the part of the code that is not negotiable. Heavy plant does not forgive lapses in concentration or shortcuts.

You must

  • Follow every instruction given by your trainer or assessor relating to safety, without argument. If you disagree, raise it after – not during.
  • Wear the personal protective equipment required for the activity, for the whole activity.
  • Stay out of exclusion zones and clear of operating plant unless directed otherwise.
  • Complete any site induction before starting practical work.
  • Report hazards, incidents and near misses immediately, including your own mistakes. Nobody is penalised for reporting something.
  • Tell us about any injury, medical condition or medication that could affect your ability to operate plant safely.
  • Stop if you are unsure. Asking is always faster than fixing.

Drugs and alcohol

You must not attend training or assessment under the influence of alcohol or drugs, including prescription or over-the-counter medication that affects your alertness or coordination.

If you are taking medication that may affect you, tell your trainer before the session starts. It stays confidential and we will work out how to proceed.

Anyone who presents a safety risk to themselves or others will be removed from the training activity. This can happen immediately and without warning, because the alternative is someone getting hurt. Where this occurs we will explain the decision to you in writing and set out what happens next.

What we expect from you

Turning up and taking part

  • Attend your scheduled sessions and arrive on time.
  • Come prepared, including any equipment or PPE you have been asked to bring.
  • Take an active part in training rather than sitting it out.
  • Complete and submit your assessments by the agreed date.
  • Ask for support if you need it – see Student Support.

Keeping us informed

  • Give us accurate information when you enrol.
  • Tell us within 7 days if your contact details change – address, mobile, email or emergency contact.
  • Respond to our messages reasonably promptly.
  • Tell us early if something is going to stop you completing.

Respect

  • Treat staff and other students with respect, whatever your opinion of them.
  • Respect other people’s values and beliefs.
  • Resolve disagreements calmly. Take it to your trainer or the office if you cannot.
  • Look after our plant, equipment, resources and facilities, and other people’s property.
  • Use our equipment only for what it is intended for.

Phones and devices

Use handheld devices during a session only where they are relevant to the activity. Phones stay away entirely during practical work around plant – there is no message worth the risk.

Fees

Pay your fees according to the arrangement you have agreed with us. If money becomes a problem, talk to us before it becomes a debt – see Fees, Charges and Refunds.

Doing your own work

Everything you submit must be your own work.

Academic misconduct includes plagiarism, collusion, getting someone else to complete your work, falsifying evidence and assessment fraud.

Where we have reason to question whether work is authentic, we may investigate further, including by asking you to demonstrate the same skill or knowledge in person.

Using AI

You may only use AI tools where your trainer or the assessment instructions say you can.

You remain responsible for everything you submit being your own work, accurate, and meeting the assessment requirements. Undisclosed or inappropriate use of AI is treated as academic misconduct.

Behaviour that is not acceptable

  • Bullying, harassment or sexual harassment.
  • Discrimination on any ground – race, gender, age, religion, disability, sexuality or anything else.
  • Threatening, intimidating, aggressive or violent behaviour.
  • Deliberately excluding or isolating someone.
  • Abuse through phone, email, text or social media.
  • Theft, or damage to plant, equipment or property.
  • Possession of weapons.
  • Attending under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Deliberately unsafe behaviour around plant.

What you can expect from us

This code runs both ways.

Your trainer will

  • Be on time and prepared.
  • Know the subject and be able to explain it in plain terms.
  • Hold current vocational competence and industry experience in what they are teaching.
  • Treat you and your property with respect.
  • Keep their own phone away during practical sessions.

Pluto Training will

  • Provide high quality training, assessment and support.
  • Give you the support you need, including reasonable adjustments.
  • Provide a safe training environment.
  • Mark and return your assessments within 10 working days of submission.
  • Give you feedback where a result is not satisfactory, so you know exactly what to do next.
  • Keep your personal information confidential and secure, and let you access what we hold about you.
  • Keep you informed with regular, relevant communication.
  • Treat you fairly and equitably.
  • Give you the opportunity to provide feedback on our services.

A note on language

Training and assessment at Pluto are delivered in English, and assessment requires you to demonstrate the communication skills the unit calls for – which on a work site means being able to communicate clearly with the people around you.

That is a requirement of the training, not a restriction on you. If English is not your first language, tell us and we will look at what support or reasonable adjustment can help. See Student Support.

If the code is breached

Most issues are resolved with a quiet word. Formal action is rare and it is never the first step – except where safety is at immediate risk, in which case you may be removed from an activity straight away.

Depending on how serious the matter is, we may:

  1. Have an informal conversation with you.
  2. Issue a formal warning in writing.
  3. Remove you from a training activity.
  4. Suspend your enrolment.
  5. Cancel your enrolment.

Before any formal action is taken you will be told what the concern is, given a fair opportunity to give your side, and told the outcome in writing with reasons. You may bring a support person to any meeting.

Where an enrolment is suspended or cancelled, our refund policy applies, and you keep credit for every unit you have already completed.

You can appeal

If you disagree with any decision made under this code, you can appeal it. It costs nothing, you can bring a support person, and you will not be disadvantaged for appealing.

If a suspension or exclusion is under appeal, it stays in place until the appeal is decided or it expires — but if the decision goes in your favour, we reverse it immediately.
